Green Turtle at Turtle City, East Coast Bonaire
A Green Turtle at “Turtle City”, one of 40+ that we saw on a single dive.

East Coast Diving takes all of the elements of the best dives on the West side-where divers normally go-and combines them into an exclusive handful of action-packed dives that are only accessible by boat. You’ll love the thrilling boat rides, great reefs, wall-to-wall sea turtles, and other pelagics.

Diving Tiger Beach with Jim Abernethy Scuba Adventures.

Emma the Tiger shark at Tiger Beach
Emma, a 15′ Tiger shark, introduces herself to me at Tiger Beach. She’s one of the superstars there, and a personal favourite of Jim’s, an now of mine too.

July 2018.

Tiger Beach is a shallow bank made-up of sand and patches of coral reefs, about 25 miles North West of Grand Bahamas Island.  It has gained a reputation among divers for reliable, close-up interactions with Tiger sharks in crystal-clear, calm, blue water.  But you will also see loads of Lemon sharks and Caribbean Reef sharks.  You will leave a different person, and with a new appreciation and respect for these apex predators.

Diving St.Eustatius-the Historical Gem.

Diving St.Eustatius
An English early 19th century Admiralty Longshank Anchor at the Double Wreck Site.

January, 2018

If you’re a diver who loves history, then St.Eustatius (called “Statia”) is THE place to go in the Caribbean.  It has been said that the island has more Colonial Period History per mile- above and below water- than anywhere else in the New World.  And new finds are continually being uncovered.  This has earned it the nicknames of the “historical gem” and the “Pompeii of the New World”. But Statia also has a dark history. It was a major slave trading center, and its local economy once thrived on slave labour.  One trip won’t be enough to fully absorb all the fascinating history, archaeology, hiking, wrecks and marine life that this island boasts.

Diving Curacao, Dutch Antilles.

July 2017.

diving curacao
A Purple Tube Sponge at the Car Pile Site, an artificial reef created to attract underwater wildlife.

Curacao is the well known “bigger brother” of Bonaire, and is one of the three “ABC” islands in the Dutch Netherlands, located in the southern Carribean.  It has some good diving-shore diving in particular-offering the independence and top side attractions that many divers enjoy.  Here’s an update on some of the well known sites, as well as an introduction to some of the lesser known and must do sites.

Diving With Great Hammerheads, Bimini, Bahamas.

Diving with hammerhead sharks, bimini, bahamas.
Undoubtedly the most recognizable silhouette in the world-the Hammerhead shark.  Seen below is the common, and ever-present Nurse shark.

March, 2017.

A little over a decade ago it was discovered that Great Hammerhead sharks, particularly females, aggregate at Bimini Island in the Northern Bahamas during the winter months (December-April).  Since then Bimini has become a shark diver’s pilgrimage. You’ll get consistent, close-up encounters and long bottom times with these elusive sharks.  And you can also expect Nurse sharks to join the mix, and maybe (hopefully) even some Bull sharks.

Grand Cayman-North Shore Wall Diving.

March, 2015.

Wall diving the North Shore of Grand Cayman.
Christian glides down Lemon Wall. He has seen Hammerheads here, and even a Tiger shark.

The North Shore of Grand Cayman is widely known for its wall diving. It’s distinguished from other areas of the island by its dramatic, sheer drop-offs, that make you feel like you’re diving an underwater mountain range.  The North Wall is filled with colourful corals and sponges, in near pristine condition, and you can expect flybys of Spotted Eagle rays and turtles.  It’s also where elusive Hammerheads are most commonly spotted as well.

Big and Small Encounters at Grand Turk (April 28, 2014).

While waiting for the ice to melt and our swollen rivers in Southern Ontario to subside to diveable conditions, I was thinking of warmer thoughts like my recent diving trip to Grand Turk.  So I used the time to put together a video that I had always planned to do when I could.  It shows a range of animal encounters from the big stuff like sharks, moray eels, and barracuda to the smaller things like garden eels and cleaner shrimp, with everything in between.

Grand Turk (Turks & Caicos Islands), Jan 2014

Grand Turk, Oasis Divers, Columbus Landfall Marine National Park
from the beach you can see how close the wall starts from shore.

I like Grand Turk for what it doesn’t have, as much as for what it does have.   Along with Little Cayman, its one of my favourite places to dive in the Caribbean.

It has all the modern conveniences,  but it still retains a quiet, laid-back appeal from an earlier time.   You’ll feel like you’re “getting away from it all” as you walk down Front and Duke streets, just feet away from the beach, among beautifully flowered-bushes, friendly people, and historic British colonial homes.   (more…)
